New Generation of Farm Tenants
Meet three of our young farm tenants blazing a trail for farming

Tess Lincoln, Burton Lazars Farm on the Little Dalby Estate

Tom Darlington, Wilds Lodge Farm on the Little Dably Estate

Sophie Iles, Home Farm on the Hatherop Estate
A positive and flexible approach to farm tenancies is giving three young rural entrepreneurs the opportunity to build up their businesses on land owned by The Ernest Cook Trust.
New and innovative arrangements have been made with young farmers who want to expand their holdings, inherit tenancies from retiring relatives or add tenanted land to farms they already own.
The agreements illustrate The Ernest Cook Trust’s commitment to supporting young people who want to get into farming and give a helping hand to those who want to grow and diversify their businesses and need more land.
Michael Birnie, our Director of Land, Property & Commercial Development, said successful farm tenancies were essential to enable the Trust to pursue its charitable objective, providing Outdoor Learning opportunities to children and young people.
Three new tenancies include giving granddaughter Tess Lincoln the chance to take over her grandfather’s farm, providing established landowner Tom Darlington with an extension to his family’s land through a tenancy and allowing 20-year-old student Sophie Iles the chance to get real hands-on farm business experience, in partnership with her father.
We rely on progressive farmers to look after our land. Their rent helps us to carry out our charitable work and, in many cases, provide the Outdoor Learning spaces we need. Having a flexible and positive approach to tenancy agreements is an important part of who we are.
